From the Principal's Desk

Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the profound sacrifice made by the brave men and women of
the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage,
dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms have shaped the nation we are
privileged to live in today. These heroes answered the call of duty with selflessness, placing the
needs of others above their own, and securing the freedoms we hold dear.
As part of the Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA), we at Alconbury Elementary School
take this time to reflect on and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Our school
community is deeply connected to the military, and we have the privilege of serving families who
symbolize resilience, strength, and service. We understand the unique challenges and sacrifices that
come with military life, and we are honored to stand alongside you.
At Alconbury Elementary School, we express our deepest appreciation for all U.S. military members,
especially those who have given their lives in defense of our nation. We are eternally grateful for
their sacrifice and the legacy they leave behind. As educators, we are proud to work hand in hand
with military families, supporting and nurturing the next generation while upholding the values these
heroes fought to protect.
This Memorial Day, we remember, we honor, and we give thanks. Their sacrifice will never be
forgotten.

Nurse's Note

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we approach the end of the school year and look forward to summer break, I would like to share a few important health reminders.

🌼 Seasonal Allergies
Many students are experiencing symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, sore throat, and itchy eyes due to seasonal allergies. Please consider consulting your pharmacist or healthcare provider.

☀️ Hydration & Heat Safety
With warmer weather, children are more at risk for dehydration and heat-related illness. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is especially important during hot days, as children lose more fluids through sweating.

🧴 Sun Protection
Please apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to your child before school. Protecting skin from harmful UV rays is important, even on cloudy days.

💊 Medication Pick-Up Reminder
If your child has medication stored at school (including inhalers, EpiPens, or other medications), please remember to pick them up before the last day of school June 9th. Medications cannot be sent home with students.

📋 Health Forms for Next School Year
As you prepare for the upcoming school year, please ensure your child’s health records are up to date, including immunizations, physical exams, and any required health action plans.

🎂 Birthday & Immunization Reminder
If your child has an upcoming birthday, please check whether they are due for any vaccinations. You can find more information here:

Counselor's Corner

Building Character Through Sportsmanship

By Dr. Rodney Cook, School Counselor

This past month, I had the opportunity to work with all students from Pre-K through 5th grade on an important topic: sportsmanship. While many students immediately connect sportsmanship to games and athletics, we explored how it applies to everyday life in school, at home, and in our community.

At our school, we emphasize being kind, safe, and smart through our PBIS expectations. What students discovered is that sportsmanship naturally brings all of these ideas together. It reflects how we show respect, practice honesty, demonstrate empathy, and take responsibility for our actions. We also connected sportsmanship to being trustworthy and displaying other important character traits that help students grow socially and emotionally.

Most students already had a solid understanding of sportsmanship, which speaks volumes about the foundation being built across our school. In fact, Mrs. McBride reinforces many of these same ideas during physical education classes, where students regularly practice teamwork, fairness, and respect in real-time situations. Because of this, the concept of sportsmanship is not new—but something students are actively learning to apply more consistently.

One of the key takeaways from our discussions is that games and activities serve a much bigger purpose than just entertainment. They provide opportunities for students and families to talk about how we treat one another, the importance of following rules, and the value of using strategy and effort rather than focusing only on winning. In fact, learning how to play—with fairness, honesty, and respect—is far more important than the outcome of the game itself.

By continuing to reinforce these skills, we help students build positive relationships, manage their emotions, and make thoughtful decisions. Sportsmanship is not just about being a good player—it’s about being a good person in all areas of life.
