From the Principal's Desk
A team works well when all members work in sync with one another. In order for the team to work together each member has to know the goals of the team, be vested in the work, and collaborate to achieve the goals. Having a common vision, using the same language, and being laser focused ensure that the team makes meaningful strides to meet its goal(s).
Alconbury Elementary has strong relationships with its team members. Who are the team members? Teachers, students, parents, Alconbury Middle High School (AMHS), and military and civilian community partners just to name some members of our invaluable team. When all facets of this team work together, know what the team is working toward, and use common language, our AES students are the beneficiaries.
This month we start up our 2025-2026 School Advisory Committee (SAC) in which our elected school and parent members work together to support our school. One SAC goal that will carry over from last year is: “Promote child health and wellness through strengthening and enhancing community involvement and partnerships”. Our first SAC meeting is in the AES Library on October 2nd at 3:30, come and join us. Our RAF Alconbury Fire Department will be providing fire prevention information to our students with hands-on presentations on October 8th. Each month the AES and AMHS administrators, along with the School Liaison Officer, meet with the 423rd ABG Commander, Col Fleming, to discuss challenges and successes within our schools. Our AES community is reading “The Water Horse” as part of our One School, One Book initiative. There are lots of dedicated individuals that are on our team that contribute to our collective achievements.
These are just a few of the efforts that help ensure that all members of our Alconbury team are working together to use the same language, work toward the same goals, and ensure that AES and our students are the ultimate recipients of our strong teamwork. Keep up the GREAT work TEAM AES!
Classroom Spotlight
Burley's Bears have had a great start to the year. We have had a visit from Mrs. Brooks who taught us how to draw, a visit from Mrs. Bowering who taught us about the cafeteria and making lunches and our head custodian Miss Michelle told us all about the hard work keeping our school clean. We went on a hunt for our naughty Gingerbread man who decided to run away leaving crumbs all over the school. We found him in the library reading to the other stuffies! Yesterday Sparky came with his firefighter friends to read a story about fire safety. We are excited to start our tree study next week!

Nurse's Note
Dear Dragon Families,
Flu season is upon us, and keeping our students healthy is a top priority. According to researchers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent the flu is through vaccination. Getting the flu vaccine not only lowers the chance of getting sick but also reduces the risk of severe illness and possible hospitalization by up to 60%.
Please take a moment to review the information provided in the Important Dates section of this newsletter or contact the Alconbury Clinic at 01480 84 2273 if you would like more details or have questions.
Thank you for helping us keep our school community safe and healthy this season!

Manners Matter at AES: Building Character Through Action
Over the next several weeks, AES students will be exploring the concept of manners—not just in the traditional sense of table etiquette, but as meaningful actions that reflect kindness, safety, and smart decision-making. Our approach goes beyond “elbows off the table” to focus on how manners shape character and relationships.
The first lesson in this series centered on honesty, a foundational trait essential for building trust, fostering personal growth, and creating a positive school environment. Students learned that honesty isn’t just about telling the truth—it’s about living it through everyday actions. Together, we explored seven keyways to practice honesty:
1. Tell the truth (facts, not opinions)
2. Own mistakes when they happen
3. Keep promises
4. Ask first—don’t take
5. Play fair
6. Stand up for others
7. Be yourself
Students also reflected on how they can be honest in different situations and responded to the open-ended question: “How can you be more honest in your life?” These discussions help students recognize that honesty is a skill they can apply across all environments—at school, at home, and in their communities.
How can families support honesty at home?
It starts with modeling. When adults keep promises, admit mistakes, and respect boundaries, children learn to do the same. For example, if a child wants to take a few coins from the change bowl or swap a healthy snack for a cookie meant for dinner, it’s a great opportunity to reinforce the principle: “Ask first—don’t take.” This simple rule helps build integrity and mutual respect.
Finally, it’s important to remember that honesty should be paired with kindness. Being truthful doesn’t mean being blunt or hurtful. If someone has gum on their shoe, loudly pointing it out with laughter may be honest—but it’s not kind. Teaching students to use tact and thoughtful communication ensures that honesty is expressed in a way that is safe, smart, and respectful.
