ALCONBURY, United Kingdom — Students at Alconbury Elementary School recently spent two weeks exploring the purpose and spirit of the Olympic Games while developing teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy competition through a schoolwide Winter Olympics unit.

During the event, students worked together across grade levels, building camaraderie as they practiced and competed in a series of Olympic-inspired activities. Each team selected a country to represent and trained for several events designed to promote cooperation, strategy, and physical activity.

Students competed in six events, including a half-mile torch relay, team speed skating, cross-country skiing, two-person bobsled, curling, and ice hockey. While teams chased gold medals in the friendly competitions, organizers emphasized that the true success of the program went beyond winning.

Throughout the activities, students built confidence, practiced teamwork, and strengthened relationships with classmates. The unit also encouraged students to engage in physical activity in a positive and enjoyable way.

Students said the experience was both exciting and rewarding.

“I had a great time playing and participating,” said Natalie, a fifth-grade student.

Liam, also a fifth grader, shared that he enjoyed competing with classmates, while fellow fifth grader Josie said she loved the sports and appreciated how kind everyone was to one another throughout the competitions.

As the final events concluded and students returned to their classrooms, the impact of the Winter Olympics unit was clear. Beyond the physical challenges, students developed a stronger sense of community, pride in their accomplishments, and a deeper appreciation for teamwork.
